Wollombi, NSW
Prior to European settlement, the land now occupied by Wollombi Village was a significant meeting point for coastal Aboriginal peoples. Wollombi means “meeting place” or “meeting place of the waters” and is an important traditional ceremonial meeting place.
The town of Wollombi was established in the early 19th century in a fertile sheltered landscape, was a typical small colonial rural township of its time. Farmers, Kooris, convicts, bushrangers and many others who struggled to carve out a living in the bush, shared the surrounding valleys, and the echo of their lives can be heard in the beautifully preserved town of today.
The superbly restored stone works of the ‘Convict Trail’ along the Great North Road can be viewed at many sites between Wollombi and These are excellent examples of early convict stone engineering. As you wander through the village take time to look at some of our stunning sandstone buildings, built before 1860.
